A passion for languages since adolescence
I discovered foreign languages during my studies at Jean Monnet middle school in Vertou, near Nantes, France: German in Year 7, then English in Year 9. When I got to secondary school, I spent hours translating the lyrics of my favourite English-speaking bands myself. Remember, this was the mid-1990s, before the Internet had taken over the world. I carefully turned each page of my paper dictionary to find the meaning of an unfamiliar term. I put these words together. I combined them to create meaningful sentences. I didn't noticed at the time, but this was the beginning of my career as a translator!
Did you know that"go on" is "continuer" in French? How do I know this? Because I translated the English lyrics of Jean-Jacques Goldman's and Michael Jones' song "Je te donne" while preparing for the French baccalaureate.Remember this? Higher Education in Applied Foreign Languages in Nantes, France
With my literary baccalaureate under my belt, I logically chose to pursue higher education in foreign languages. When I started this course, I didn't yet have a clear idea of the career I wanted to embrace. But I was already thinking about putting my language skills to use in the business world. I'm a very practical person! So I chose the Applied Foreign Languages (LEA) programme at the University of Nantes, France. Courses in English, German and Italian are combined with practical specialisations such as:
- Economy
- Law
- Marketing
- IT
- Accounting
- Etc.
During my studies at the International Language Centre (CIL) on the banks of the Erdre, one professor in particular passed on his passion for translation to me. Thomas Lenzen, a German-speaking translator, was also our German professor for our bachelor's degree. He taught us how to translate texts written in a foreign language into French, my native language. He also introduces us to the reverse process, namely translating from French into German. It was a revelation for me! From this time, I knew what I wanted to do for a living: I was going to be a translator!
In June 2003, I obtained a bachelor's degree in Applied Foreign Languages from the University of Nantes. I then passed the entrance exam for the Master in Translation Techniques and Specialised Translation at the University of Toulouse-Jean Jaurès. During this fifth year of higher education and specialisation, professors who were also professional translators taught us proven methodologies and ad hoc techniques. These passionate and inspiring lecturers shared their valuable knowledge with us. I graduated in 2004 after completing a four-month internship in the translation department of Vogel France, a company based in Saumur.
Specialisation in SEO Web Writing and Social Media Management in 2024
One year later, in 2005, I set up my own freelance translation business. I quickly specialised in editorial work, as there was high demand for it. Since then, I have been regularly entrusted with:
- Web pages presenting the latest Renault vehicles
- Press releases from graphics tablet specialist Wacom
- Technical and commercial training courses for Audi after-sales service advisors
- Advertising slogans and print and digital marketing materials from big names in the tourism industry
- Etc.
The different projects follow one after another. And that is precisely what makes being a freelance translator so appealing. It opens up a world of possibilities. One day, I am rewriting an article in French about coral bleaching for publication on the website of National Geographic. The next day, I adapt a promotion for an Orange package, the telephone operator, for the French-speaking public.
Specialisation in SEO Web Writing and Social Media Management in 2024
For almost 20 years,I rewrite online content originally written in English or German for French-speaking readers. For instance, I have been translating Renault and Dacia web pages into French since 2018. Without really realising it, I am already writing texts that are optimised for the internet.
The bridge to search engine optimisation is right there! I love copywriting, choosing the right words, finding the perfect phrase. Having enjoyed creating my own professional showcase website, I decided to add another string to my bow and an extra skill to offer my clients. I took a course in SEO web writing for nearly five months. At the end of this training, I obtained a "Writing Content for the Web" certification validated by France Compétences – the French national public institution regulating vocational training.
